Hey folks… It’s almost time to bow down to the best in the contemporary music scene. In late January, LA will be abuzz with rappers, rockers and hip-hop junkies as the 60th edition of the Grammy Awards gets underway.
Last year, more than 26 million music lovers jived, shimmied and twerked in front of the telly as the likes of Bruno Mars, Adele, Beyonce and Lady Gaga did their thing. There were tributes to Prince, George Michael and The Bee Gees and cool collaborations between a shimmering universe of individual stars.
The eclectic arrangement of music genres meant there was something for everyone to boogie on down to, play slots to or simply sit and ruminate to….as the dizzy sounds whirled and whirled around the head. With some of the best generators of sublime sound nominated for the 2018 awards, you can expect top class entertainment with a capital E to kickstart the new year.
Nominations for all music categories are done and dusted. So, in celebration of the men and women who have gotten the nod, let’s take a look at a few interesting facts about the most interesting nominees:
Danny Glover’s alter ego, Childish Gambino has been nominated for several Grammy categories. His album ‘Awaken, My Love’ features in the Album of the Year and the Urban Category Album, while ‘Redbone’ is given the thumbs up in the Record of the Year, R&B Performance and R&B Song categories.
He, who got his way-out moniker from the Wu-Tang Name Generator, is set to hang up the mic on his music career. The precociously talented and multi-skilled movie star, musician and director figures it’s time to move on when you feel as though you are the radio! We’ll sure miss your tunes… Childish!
BTW, if some of the other nominees did a Wu-Tang, Bruno Mars would become ‘Sarkastik Madman’, Julia Michaels ‘Drunken Artist’, Justin Bieber ‘Unlucky Contender’ and Khalid, ‘Fearless Prophet’!
Talking about the Beeb, his remix of Despacito is the first ever non-English track to be nominated for the Song of the Year and Record of the Year categories. It’s also the first Spanish song to reach number 1 on the Billboard 100 since Macarena.
According to the original artists Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, Despacito is all about making love the slow sensual way. We wonder if Justin is taking a few tips or whether he’s an unlucky contender in the sack!

The grand master of rap has been nominated in several categories yet again this year, both alone and with his glamorous wife Beyonce. Shawn Corey Carter may be a super rich star but his private life ain’t always so sweet.
According to the gossips out there, Carter aka Jay-Z let it all hang out in his album’s title track 4:44… which, by the way, is the exact time he leaped out of bed to write the lyrics to the tune. He apparently admits he cheated on his wife, confesses his mama prefers girls and takes a swipe at Eric Benét for cuckolding Halle Berry!
Alecia Beth Moore – better known as P!nk – has recently released her seventh album ‘Beautiful Trauma’. Of the 13 songs she co-wrote for the album, ‘What About Us’ is the showstopper as the nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance attests.
The track has also topped the charts in dozens of countries around the world, from Down Under in Australia, up north in Canada to Mexico, the Czech Republic, USA, Romania and The Netherlands. Talk about international appeal…go get that Grammy girl!
