Pai Gow Poker, also known as Double-Hand Poker, is a mixture of the ancient Chinese game of Pai Gow and the well-known card game of poker. Pai Gow Poker is a fairly recent creation in the world of casino games, but it caught on quickly and has become popular in land-based and online casinos throughout the world.
Traditional Chinese Pai Gow
Pai Gow, or, as it is known in the Cantonese dialect, Pinyin, is an ancient Chinese gambling game using tile-like dominoes. Each of the dominoes is made up of a unique pattern, and there are a total of 21 different patterns. There are a total of 32 tiles in a set, which is made up of two different suits, known as the “military” and “civilian.” These names are obviously given as a result of the warring mentality of the Chinese at that time. There are no particular markings on the tiles to differentiate between each suit; a player must just remember which tiles belong to which suit. Pai Gow was played by giving out 7 tiles to each player, and bets were made on who would get the better tiles.
Some Poker History
Poker is also a very old game, dating back to the 14th and 15th Centuries. The name was adapted from the French “Poque” and German “Pochen” which both mean to push. The original game was played with a pack of only twenty cards, and each player was dealt four cards. In time and with the growth in popularity of the game, a full pack of 52 cards was used. With the increase in the number of poker games played and the legalization of casinos across the world, different versions of poker became established. Different variants of the game panned out in different countries and cities all over the world. Some of the variants became widely accepted and are still played today, such as draw poker and stud poker.
Pai Gow Poker Is Born
Sam Torosian was the owner of the California Bell Casino in Bell, California, near Los Angeles, in 1985. Sam Torosian had a brilliant idea: he took certain ideas and methods of play from the game of Pai Gow and mixed them with elements of poker to create a brand new casino game: Pai Gow Poker. This new casino game was a perfect blend of old and new, East and West, luck and strategy, and it was an instant hit in the California Bell Casino. By 1986 Pai Gow Poker was being played in all of the Californian casinos, and the following year it made its way to the casinos in Las Vegas and subsequently Atlantic City. Before long, casinos all over the world were set out with special tables to play Pai Gow Poker on.
Following the success of Pai Gow Poker, Sam Torosian, along with his partner Fred Wolf, went on to create other casino gambling games that are still played in casinos today.
Online Pai Gow Poker
With the introduction of online casinos in the 1990s, Pai Gow Poker was a natural game to be adapted for the internet. One change that was made was the addition of the Bonus bet, which allows players to win even bigger jackpot payouts, resulting in the game of Online Bonus Pai Gow Poker that is now offered at All Slots Online Casino. Another advantage of playing Pai Gow Poker online is that the player has the option of clicking the House Way button and having the computer divide his hands for him according to the optimal Pai Gow Poker strategy. While the rest of Sam Torosian’s original Pai Gow Poker rules have remained intact in the transition to the online game, these changes have helped to make online Bonus Pai Gow Poker a popular game in the online casino.
