First Class plane tickets are astronomically expensive. This is down to the perks they provide, and the fact that they make it possible for airlines to offer hugely discounted Economy Class seats. But when the difference between ticket prices is 70%, can paying for First Class be justified? Is it worth the expense?
Simply put, yes and no. Simple monetary or mathematical comparison would say it is not. But there are some serious advantages. If you land a major windfall playing pokies and can afford the extra price tag (which can stretch to $32,000 and beyond) we’d encourage you to do it. And we’ve outlined the reasons why.
The Perks are Pretty Amazing
From the moment you walk into the airport, you’re going to have a better time as a First Class passenger. Settle into the lounge to enjoy a pre-flight drink or free mani-pedi, or take a refreshing shower when you land. You can even be driven to your connecting flight in a Mercedes Benz or a Porsche.
And when you’re in the air, you can expect meals prepared by Michelin-star chefs, free pyjamas, eye masks, drinks and expensive goodie bags. The padded seats are between 4 and 6 times larger than what you’ll find in Economy, giving you extra leg room, and the television screens are larger too.
You can even lie down on a flat bed, complete with bedding. Some airplanes, like Etihad’s A380 fleet, actually offer entire suites. These are complete with a private bathroom and shower, a double-bed bedroom, and a living room. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a normal, luxury hotel room – except for the incredible view, of course.
You’ll be Far More Refreshed
The thing about being treated so well is that you just feel so much better when you land. Cramped Economy seats lead to poor sleep, and boarding and de-planing is much more stressful. All this adds up to less time and energy to deal with the meetings or other business you were travelling for in the first place. And the advantages of privacy and extra space when you’re travelling with young children are hard to over-emphasise
Priceless Networking Opportunities
In the First Class lounge and on the flight, you’ll be rubbing shoulders with captains of every kind of industry. Relaxing with a Fortune 500 company president is the equivalent to playing a round of golf with them, and can lead to deals that are just as beneficial.
You’ll be Able to Get More Done
Not only will the extra space and perks allow you to think better than you would in Economy, you’ll also have more power outlets and Wi-Fi connections. You’ll also be thinking more clearly, so you may be able to come up with creative new concepts. If a brilliant idea comes to you as you are luxuriating above the clouds, you’ll be able to start taking the steps to make it happen.
Worth it if You Can Afford It
So if you’ve got the money to see how the other half (or the other 1%, frankly) lives, we’d say go for it. Buy First Class plane tickets and enjoy all the luxuries and advantages that come along with that. After all, there’s no way to put a price on sitting next to Spielberg and having him take up your incredible movie idea.
Just be warned – aside from the extra energy and productivity you’ll enjoy, the tangible perks are almost impossible to give up. Once you’ve experienced the meals and special treatment of First Class, the hot towels that they give you in Economy are simply not the same.
