Something that everyone can agree on is that Star Wars fans need a day to celebrate the franchise, and, thankfully, this is being done in the way of Star Wars day. The day is filled with people across the globe observing the Star Wars franchise, universally agreeing to ignore the prequels and Ewoks, and insisting that the franchise as a whole is fantastic.
The celebrations generally include fans dressing up as their favourite characters, marathon watching the films, and otherwise having a good time. A number of businesses run Star Wars day special offers and promotional deals, meaning that everyone can spend money while dressed as Han Solo. It’s a rollicking good time, and has occurred annually, to some degree, since 2010.
May The 4th Be With You?
Star Wars day is held on May 4th every year, which is a witty play on words relating to the popular Star Wars phrase “May the force be with you.” The exact line is spoken first by General Dodonna in a New Hope, and soon afterwards by Han Solo. There is much significance in Han saying the line to Luke Skywalker, given that Han had previously expressed doubt in Luke following what he thought to be a hokey religion. Saying the line was an expression of true friendship between Han and Luke.
Many believe that the character Obi Wan Kenobi first used the line “May the force be with you,” but this is another common movie misconception. Obi Wan Kenobi, in fact, never says the line at all, but instead a variety of lines that are similar. “The force will be with you, always,” is said by Obi Wan, as well as “Luke, the Force will be with you.”
So the first major character to use the exact phrase is, in fact, Han Solo.
Disney Celebrates Star Wars Day
The original Star Wars day was never acknowledged or celebrated by George Lucas. However, once the franchise was sold to Disney, the mega-corporation quickly went about making May 4th their official Star Wars day. This means that a number of Disney hosted events will be taking place, including parades and other functions at Disney World, and Disneyland.
The parades generally involve actors dressed as various favourite Star War’s characters, with rows upon rows of Storm Troopers a given. However, should you not be in travelling range of one of Disney’s theme parks, there are other ways that a person can show their Star War’s appreciation.
How Do You Celebrate?
Star War’s day is, of course, a great time to binge on a Star War’s marathon, including or excluding the prequels, as you see fit. And if you don’t yet own the movies, May 4th is the perfect time to get yourself copies, given that dozens of outlets hold Star Wars bundle package deals. Once again, including or excluding the prequels. Star Wars themed video games, and other merchandise, are also on sale at a number of outlets. Including, naturally, Star Wars costumes.
If you’re looking for other ways to celebrate you could play casino games like Star Scape, or you could work your way through all space related games that play homage to the franchise in one or another.
With all the required accessories available, many fans also have Star Wars parties on May 4th. This involves guests dressing up as a favourite character, and sitting in for a multi hour binge marathon. Just keep in mind that many of the costumes look great, but aren’t really the best attire for sitting and watching movies for eight straight hours. Those who dress as Chewbacca are normally the first to pass out from heat stroke, followed by all the Darth Vader lookalikes, so choose your costume carefully!
All in all, Star Wars day is a fun way to celebrate, and it’s a bit like Valentines Day for fans who’d prefer to partner up with Hans Solo, Yoda or Princess Leia!
However you choose to partake, may the 4th be with you.
